Time to pull those boogie shoes out of your closet – the World’s Largest Disco is fast approaching! An event that has become a Buffalo tradition, the World’s Largest Disco is once again being held at the Buffalo Convention Center on the Saturday following Thanksgiving – this year, November 24th. With disco tunes filling the convention center until the wee hours of the morning, and celebrity appearances that have included David Cassidy, “Fonzie,” and Lou Ferrigno in year’s past, this is truly an event that you should experience at least once in your lifetime.
The first disco was held in 1979 at the Buffalo Convention Center, drawing a crowd of nearly 13,000 – confirmed by the Guinness Book of World Records to be “The World’s Largest Disco.” The next was held on its 15 year anniversary, in 1994, beginning the annual tradition of the Disco in Buffalo.Tickets typically go on sale in the early summer months, and always sell out quickly. And by quickly, I mean the day they go on sale, is the day they sell out.
The first disco was held in the Buffalo Convention Center’s first year of being open. At that time, it was a state-of-the-art, industry leading convention center. Much has changed since that time, and up until 2009, no major renovations had been made to the building. In 2010, a $7 million upgrade to the convention center was complete, incorporating new floors, walls, and ceilings. The following is an inclusive list of all of the updates that were made:
- A new main entrance and state-of-the-art electronic marquee
- A top-to-bottom facelift for the main exhibit hall:
- The floor was completely resurfaced
- The ceiling was painted black
- New flexible lighting
- Added sound baffles and acoustical treatments
- Renovated concession areas with new equipment
- New wall coverings
- Updated signage
- Renovated show offices
- New carpet
- Redesigned kitchen with new equipment and new chef’s table/tasting room
Last year was my first time attending this event, and needless to say, I’ve been looking forward to its return all year long. From grooving to the music in my best disco outfit to the limo ride filled with plenty of disco-die-hards, it was truly a high energy event, and all for a good cause! The World’s Largest Disco is a benefit event for Camp Good Days and Special Times, and proceeds have reached nearly $3 million since 1994. Because my group was grooving near the front of the stage, I got an up-close and personal view of a live performances by various 70’s-era tribute singers all night. It was truly an event to remember, and is less than two weeks away!
So grab those boogie shoes, and let’s groove tonight! For more information and to view pictures from past year’s events, visit here.
